How corporate professionals are coping with layoffs

Business Week writer Karen Klein notes that “With corporate layoffs reaching record levels, a lot of experts predict that there’ll be a surge of new entrepreneurial activity next year.”

The Article is an interview with Taylor Smith, managing partner of the Venture Development Firm, The Spirus Group.

Two of his key points that we think resonate with the millions who have been recently let go, or are in companies that will face more layoffs in 2009, are summarized as:

  • A lot of work (including deciding on a business model, lining up the financing, creating a marketing strategy, and finding suppliers) can be done on nights and weekends
  • Before you leave your current job, clear out the underbrush by “doing things like your legal incorporation, getting a Web site up and running, and getting the proper permits”
